First of all, I apologize for the small size. I'm working from a small resolution photo of the full piece (which is over 3 feet wide). Soon I'll have a larger version. Meanwhile, there are a couple of detail shots of the pieces (Aren't You So and So? and Returning from the Catacombs) in my gallery.
This piece has over 80 hours invested into it. Ten pieces comprise this, three of which are paintings/drawings and seven are silver gelatin prints achieved through liquid emulsion being applied to various papers and fabrics and the images being printed in a darkroom. Most of these papers were then tea stained and painted with gouache, ink, and watercolor and also charcoal. The pieces are attached with thread... yes, I actually sewed the piece together.
The frame has just been completed. It's made up of 22 pieces of maple wood. My Dad and I just finished putting the thing together from scratch. I think the frame turned out beautifully.
This is the largest and most time consuming piece I've ever created--two months in the making. It was inspired by an Of Montreal song.
Thanks for viewing! Here are some pictures of the final day of working on the frame and artwork.
The art is cool but... good lord that frame is epic. Me and some mates run a movie poster picture framing business [link] and I used to work in a picture framers so I know a bit about frames and that is NUTS! Is it all hand measured and cut?
Oh yeah, it was insane putting it together. 22 pieces, all measured by hand. My Dad did most of the work. He had all the tools and knew how to put it together, thank goodness. There were some really tough angles and lots of filler used. When you get up close, you can see a few mistakes, but overall, I think it looks nice.
I think I'll make my own frames from now on, though. Anything is easier than that one.
Again, I am awestruck. The effort and time invested on this is just amazing. And everything compliments everything else... especially the size of each painting. I can never figure out how people make that work. March on, young artist! xD
one day I want to achieve something as magnificent.
